The Gallery of the Ancient Art in Hostinné

In 1969, the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception in the complex of the former Franciscan convent in Hostinné, East Bohemia, finally saved the Collection from complete disaster.

The age-old gallery, opened in 1969, is organized in order of chronology and presents nearly 110 casts, mapping all the periods of Greek sculpture; it also displays some pieces of Roman art up until the end of the 2nd century AD.

The vast space of the catholic baroque church strikingly contrasts with the famous pagan statues of the Melian Aphrodite, Nice of Samothrace, Apoxyomenos or Barberini Faun.

Seasonal exhibitions are placed every year in the choir loft of the church, focused on themes tied to classical antiquity, the archaeological activities of the Institute for Classical Archaeology of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University and the like.
